Heirloom seeds are basically seeds that are not used in large scale modern-day agriculture. Foods grown through commercial operations are often chosen for their ability to withstand difficult conditions such as shipping, mechanical picking, drought, cold weather or pesticides rather than for their great taste. As a result, many of the great tasting varieties of vegetables and fruits have been lost to the general population.

Heirloom gardeners grow these more obscure types of plants and harvest some of the best tasting produce that there is. Some heirloom seeds are available commercially, but many seeds are also sold by individuals who grow vegetables and fruits themselves. You can frequently find these on such sites as Ebay. The freshness of your own tomato crop is a big advantage. Vegetables that you buy from the supermarket, and then store in the refrigerator can start to become inedible after just a few days.  Many times, homegrown vegetables are still fresh in the fridge after 2 weeks or so.  In the case of tomatoes, you can pick fresh ones off of the vine to enjoy with your sandwich. Tomatoes don’t get much better than that!

Typically, your tomato plants will produce a lot of tomatoes.
